What are Concept Maps? |
A concept map is a graphical tool; a diagram that shows relationships between concepts. The technique for visualizing these relationships among different concepts is called ‘concept mapping’. Concept maps represent concepts, usually enclosed in circles or boxes, and relationships between these concepts with connecting lines linking the two concepts. Words that describe the relationship between these concepts; ‘linking words’ or ‘linking phrases’, lay on these connecting lines. The phases to construct a concept map are: brainstorming, organizing, layout, linking and finalizing the concept map.
A concept map is a simple tool that can develop ideas and notions quickly, while helping students retain the concepts clearly and effortlessly. It is a good example of ‘scaffolding’; the support and structure necessary for students to learn information and complete tasks successfully.
